60th Old Friends' Day

It was a very pleasant September day among the solemn cedars of IU for our 60^th Old Friends’ Day picnic. Although every person at Old Friends’ Day is worthy of note, there were many notable visitors/members at Old Friends Day this year. Rennie Stavely’s Uncle William Sewell Stavely was here all the way from Salisaw, Oklahoma. He had his 86th birthday on Sept. 12th. He is a first cousin of the late Reyner Wroth Stavely, Maggie Payne's father and Col. James W. S. Meikle's grandfather. With him was his brother, Rennie’s Uncle David M. Stavely of Easton, MD who just turned 84 in November. Our Cousin Catharine Hepbron Harris, who was 96 years old on Sept. 8th was there, alert and always delightful and sprite. Also of note was Monroe Hudson of Kent Co., who has generously contributed to our I. U. Fam. Assoc. endowment fund. He was in the same high school class and is the same age as Wm. S. Stavely of OK. Monroe's mother, Emily Plummer Hudson, was the organist at I. U. Church for many years and was on the original board of I. U. Families Assoc. Harold Miller, age 80, was there from N. Wales, PA. He has been active in our assn. since about 1959. Rennie’s 3rd cousin, J. Thomas Stavely of N. Wales, PA, his sister Jean Stavely, from Willow Grove, PA and Tom's daughter Sarah and son J. T. Stavely Vth were there. Steve and Nancy Sharon Hepbron Ash from north of Elkton brought down Steve's early 1930s auto with the jumper seat to give rides to all of the children. The children loved riding around in this old classic. Rev. McIntyre of Hartford Co., MD conducted the church service. He was rector of I. U. in the late 60s- early 70s when Rennie’s late Dad, Joseph G. Stavely, had a Sunday School at I. U. in which my Dad, Steve Meikle, was a class member. William J. Hepbron, former treasurer, and his wife Donna were there from Glasgow, DE. John Sprinkle, our chairman, and his wife and boys were there from Alexandria, VA. We want to thank the IU Vestry and everyone who contributed to the success of our 60^th Old Friends’ Day.

With this posting, IU Families Association is launching its first ever blog. We hope this will be a place members can contribute articles and share memories with others. It's amazing how far the IU Families Association has come over these past sixty years, and with a well-connected member base, we hope to make it at least another sixty.
